Imagine you live in a community of people where there are no doctors, pharmacists or dentists because no one needed one. It happened less than a century ago in multiple places on the planet and this book provides you with simple steps to help recreate it. The primary concept of this book: If a diet consistently results in jaw deformities, irregular position of teeth, tooth decay or gum disease, without orthodontic or dental hygiene interventions, and is a precursor for diabetes, obesity and coronary heart disease, it is not an optimal human diet. The diet presented in Nudge Your Health, Step 2: Nourish is a Paleo, low carb and high-fat diet. Being a third-generation, functional medicine physician has allowed me to study and experiment with an unfathomable number of ways professed to be healthy, including countless diets, numerous exercise and movement programs, varying degrees of daily activity, dietary supplements, sunlight exposure, stress reduction techniques, detoxification methods, meditation and sleep hygiene. Of all of these areas of health, nothing is more like a religion than nutrition. However, I am not religious about nutrition, nor am I asking you to believe my methods. I simply present in Nudge Your Health, Step 2: Nourish, the science of nutrition and what worked best for me and my patients over the last two decades. I am asking you to consider the scientific evidence I present, try the nutritional strategies that resonate with you and keep track of your results to determine what works best for you. Many view eating for good health as an on and off switch, either they are on a diet or off a diet. Rather than offering a strict and rigid diet, Nudge Your Health, Step 2: Nourish seeks to meet people where they are at and encourages you to do just a little bit of action each day to be healthier, such as make and enjoy one healthy recipe each day. The first two weeks focus on different ways to prepare vegetable-based meals. The third and final week incorporates high-quality, animal meats in the mostly vegetable meals. It ends with an introduction to various types of fasting. Early success following the program will empower you to keep going and make the program enjoyable. The leading causes of death, heart disease, stroke, cancer, type-2 diabetes and arthritis, demonstrate modern diets are not serving individuals or society well. What is the healthiest diet for humans to follow? One that provides you the building blocks of robust health and results in feeling vibrant, energetic and healthy without tooth and gum diseases, hormone imbalances and inflammation.
