“Never Say Never” is about 41 years in elective office- virtually a lifetime. Part I, “Getting There” provides the reader with detailed practical information on how to get a nomination to run, and how to run a successful campaign for political office. It includes actual experiences of the author, both good and bad, on his campaigns to get there. Part II, “Being There” relates the author’s experiences as a member and President of the Syracuse Board of Education, as a member and President of the Syracuse Common Council, and as a member and a leader in the New York State Senate. The author was there when Central New York decisions were made as to where a professional baseball stadium was to be sited, and when developers of a major mall were given hundreds of millions of tax dollars and tax breaks to expand the existing “Carousel” shopping mall into the “Destiny” mall, which expansion fell far short of the developer’s promises. The author was there when Elliot Spitzer was a rising star in politics and when Governor Spitzer crashed and burned, and when a coup occurred in the NY State Senate. The author was also there when Andrew Cuomo wanted to clean up New York through a professed “independent” commission, the members of which he appointed, and was there when he terminated that “independent” commission when it was getting too close to home. And the author was there during the terms of five different governors for many other chapters in NY State history, which are listed in the book’s table of contents. “Never Say Never” was written for those, like the author, who have said that they would never get involved with politics, let alone run for elective office. Those that say “never” can learn what it really takes to run a successful campaign, and what its like serving in public office. And who knows, maybe the book may change some minds. Government, more than ever, needs good people to help make things better, and maybe the readers are those good people.
